How to Navigate Behavioral Therapy & Parent Coaching Reviews

If you’re comparing parent coaching services by reading through reviews of behavioral therapy companies, you already know the tip lists only go so far. What you actually want to know is whether a company’s results hold up once the consultant leaves the room.

As a Licensed and Board Certified Behavior Analyst, I am bound by a strict code of ethics (and in my case, two regulatory bodies!) It’s important to note that no accredited national or state organizations license or certify parent coaches. Anyone can attend a training and get “certified” as a parent coach, regardless of educational or experiential background.

What to Look for in Parent Coaching Reviews

A few details separate a useful review from a generic one:

  • Look for specifics, like a child following directions without a fight or a parent finally feeling confident handling a meltdown, rather than just “they were great.”
  • Verify who’s behind the coaching and their credentials: a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) means the strategies are grounded in the science of behavior, not just general parenting tips.
  • Keep an eye out for tools parents can keep using on their own, since the best parent coaching programs outlast the sessions themselves.

A Coaching Partnership, Not a One-Size-Fits-All Plan

Useful parent coaching reviews should point to something bigger than just good advice: a coaching relationship built around the actual family in front of them.

For example, at Behave Your Best (BYB), that starts with the introductory consultation, where our first job is understanding your specific goals and what’s already been tried–not handing you a generic strategy.

From there, support is built around what the data shows your family actually needs. Some families need just a few follow-up hours to put a plan into practice. Others want hands-on, in-home coaching so they can watch a strategy in action before trying it themselves. Some may simply want a digital program to keep costs down and go at their own pace.

Whichever you choose, great parent coaching is meant to get parents and caregivers on the same page, so you’re not pulling in different directions at home.

What Real Parents Say About Working With Behave Your Best

Behave Your Best works with families on everything from tantrums to potty training, with parent coaching led by experienced child behavior analysts. Here’s some of what parents have shared in their own words:

“Behave Your Best changed our lives! They gave us all the tools we needed to handle our child’s big emotions. They did it in a way that was easy for us to understand and we started noticing changes immediately. I’m not sure what we would do without them! They are the BEST!” — Shelly*

“Jamie is amazing, our son has improved exponentially with her tools and guidance. She is not only helping us improve our son’s ‘knee jerk’ reactions to triggers and difficult situations, but also is improving our parenting skills. Absolutely recommend Behave Your Best to anyone who needs support, coaching or new tools to help promote your child’s healthy emotional development/management skills.” — Angela

“Jamie is simply brilliant! BYB and Jamie were there for us helping with child anxiety and stress over a 2 year span. The tips and techniques set our kiddos up for success and taught us, as parents, life long lessons/strategies to help with any scenario that arises. We are very thankful for Jamie and BYB!” — Jason

“Jamie and her team are professional, kind, and genuinely care about helping parents and children…It truly does “take a village” to raise kiddos, our family is grateful that BYB is a part of ours. Thank you for all that you do BYB!” — Jill*

“We love Behave Your Best, the tools are simple to use and practical for all kinds of situations and kid issues. We are enjoying our sweet toddler and so happy we worked with this team early before we were unknowingly reinforcing bad behavior. We have what we need to increase desired behaviors from the start. Our now 2.5 year old says, please and thank you without being prompted, waits nicely, even puts himself to bed sometimes. Thank you for bringing so much extra joy into our lives.” — Rachel
